How chiropractic therapy can help with PVC

One of the things that constantly amazes me is how much Chiropractors in Minneapolis have become what primary care doctors used to be. In chiro school we know that we are trained to be primary care doctors, but really I thought that I would be dealing primarily with spine related injuries. What I know now is that people crave a practitioner that is well rounded, that they can go to for advice and treatment on a large spectrum of health issues. While I still have plenty of spine related complaints that come in, it is a rare day when a patient doesn’t come in for something organ or mental health related. The more that our health care industry becomes actually purely sick care industry- and the more that medicine becomes dictated by large corporations where the profit margin is the main concern, the more our society seeks out doctors that they can have a long standing relationship with and that knows them, knows their lives and knows their needs.

I regularly work nutritionally and holistically with a broad assortment of conditions, from gut problems, depression, asthma, skin issues, thyroid problems, fertility concerns, etc. But one of the most surprising to me is how I have developed a following of people coming to me for heart related concerns and arrhythmias and tachycardia. As are with most niche markets, it started quite modestly. I had previously experienced PVC’s myself. Premature ventricular heart contractions are a common arrhythmia that occurs in almost every person’s heart at some point in time. They are so common that I have had a cardiologist tell me they are actually considered to be normal. They don’t feel normal. Many people have felt these beats as their heart “skipping” a beat or a fluttering feeling. They usually are very brief and very infrequent. When PVC’s become frequent and regular, they can cause a lot of discomfort and anxiety. When I started experiencing PVC’s frequently it caused an enormous amount of concern for me. With over a year of cardiology training that is standard in chiropractic school- you learn how serious arrhythmia’s can be and how fragile a heart is.

Basically it felt like I was about to die at any second. It felt like my heart was going to start pounding out of my chest, or start fluttering, like it was going to explode and I was going to drop to my knees at any second and die. Not a good place to be in.

This started me on a quest in the medical industry for answers. I went to a dozen different heart specialists, had monitors for days, weeks even months. I had EKGS, ct scans, ultrasounds, blood work, even MRI’s. Every scan that I had, did indeed verify that they were happening, but that they were harmless and other than intense medication that would cause a slew of side effects, there was nothing that they could do about them. I was told that I would just have to learn to live with them, oh yeah and come back in 5 years to see if something more serious had developed. As I stared dumbfounded at a wall, as the cardiologist that had spent exactly 2 minutes 34 seconds with me (I timed it), exited the room, I started to get really angry. At first I got angry with him, but soon got angry with myself for ever expecting anything different from him or the industry in general.

I fully admit that I used to look down on MD’s in general. Historically chiropractors and medical doctors have not had the best track record of mutual admiration. At one point the medical industry saw our profession as such a threat that it actually formatted a premeditated and orchestrated attempt to abolish our profession as a whole. In one of the largest class action suits ever, Wilk v. AMA, the chiropractors sued the medical industry for antitrust violations and won a large monetary settlement that was used to support further research into the effectiveness of chiropractic. It is rare to find a chiropractor that cannot tell some story of a run in with a pompous MD spouting misinformation about chiropractic or giving completely unsubstantiated warnings about our trade. I myself have had to give a tongue lashing or two to a green MD that thought he was going to assert his non existent authority over me.

A decade later, I have developed some very close ties to an assortment of MD’s and I now no longer feel adverial with them. There are always a few that I certainly would not back down from debate with, but now, I mostly feel sorry for them. Most of the MD’s I know are overworked, micromanaged, over lorded by HMO’s and practice managers. Their visits are timed by clinic managers, their prescriptions are quota’d and they are basically told what they can and cannot do for patient care. If they stray from the path, they are written up and fired. If they truly buck the system, they are reported to their boards for bogus claims and have their licenses suspended or revoked.

So there I sat getting pissed at myself for expecting better and counting the skipping, fluttering feeling in my chest that certainly had not improved from this visit. When an MD tells me that I just have to live with something, that translates to me as, TRY HARDER and look somewhere else.

So off I went to the medical journals. Many hours into research, it came to my attention that there were known solutions to PVC’s. Many different articles cited success with several supplements including carnatine, magnesium and Taurine. I calculated the appropriate dose for body weight and gave it a shot. A glass of water and a few supplements down the hatch. 20 minutes later my PVC’s were gone. Gone. Not a one. No fluttering. No skipping, so pounding in my chest.

As fate has it, of course the next week I had a patient that came in for middle back pain who indicated on her intake form that she was suffering from PVC’s. Hers were significantly worse than mine. She was having thousands of them a day and had been suffering with them for years. To make it worse, she was now pregnant and could not take the medications that had slightly improved them. I explained my story, researched the safety implications for pregnancy and she tried the same protocol. 25 minutes later, her PVC’s were gone. She burst into tears. I completely understood why.

I have never had a patient come to me suffering with these, that we have not been able to drastically improve. Most completely eradicate them. It sometimes baffles me how much the medical industry has dropped the ball on so many patients. It is ironic that their philosophy of a drug for everything and then a drug for the side effect of the last drug approach to patient care has backfired so completely. It is the drug dealing that has really created the demand for chiropractors. The more drugs they prescribe, the more people slip through their grasps and seek out natural healthcare solutions. I am at my core grateful for every person that comes to me because they will not settle with the “learn to live with it” mandate and who know that there are better, more effective and safer options to restore their health and their lives. Do you suffer from migraines?

There are two kinds of people in this world. People that have had a migraine and those that haven’t. Unfortunately, I know them all too well. I started having migraines as a teenager and know the pure torture of them.

A migraine is like molten lava being poured on the inside of your skull. Like a pick axe jabbing and twisting into your brain. Like a vice attached to your skin and torqueing your mind. A migraine is like child labour in your head with out the reward of a child after. Instead of a cute little munchkin, you get a head so sore that it feels like your skull is bruised, your brain is foggy and your body is drained and exhausted.

Migraines are very common currently in the United States. 18% of American women and 6% of men, 10% of children experience migraines. Migraines are best described as debilitating; studies have shown that more than 90% of migraine sufferers cannot work or function normally during a migraine.

As a youth, my family tried and suggested mostly conventional medical approaches to my frequent migraines. I was infused with ibuprofen, aspirin, antihistamines, and a slew of over the counter bottles. While sometimes they would slightly reduce the pounding, they were anything but a cure.

My family was as far from a natural health model was handed a glass of water with a variety of over the counter conjoins. aspirin, ibuprofen, antihistamines…none doing much other than maybe a slight dent in the torture.

I remember my first chiropractic adjustment occurred when I was in my early 20s. In the few seconds that it took my chiropractor to gently realign my neck, it was like I was hitting the restart button on my life. The clouds parted and I could see colors sharper a thin haze had been lifted from my life and it was instantaneous. How did you do that??? How did I never know about this??? How did I live with out this?? As the thoughts ripped though my mind I know I would never ever be the same and my life would always include chiropractic.

I have worked on thousands of patients with migraines nearly all are blown away with how profoundly chiropractic can change their migraine patterns. In my two years of researching migraines my two part conclusion is as follows:

The standard medical treatment approach sucks ass and is pathetic.
Most migraines are caused by three main things.

  • Upper cervical subluxations
  • Gut dysbiosis
  • Toxicity

Toxicity is perhaps the most looming factor in all of our biological landscapes. I believe that we are all varying degrees of chronically toxic. We are bombarded by toxins from the moment of conception into all moments of our lives. The food we eat, what we drink, the air we breathe what touches our skin and is absorbed from every orifice is commonly tainted with a slew of cancer causing, hormone disrupting energy depressing chemically engineered products and byproducts. Despite the purest of organic diets and the best we try, I believe the ratio or exposure is too prevalent and we all need to supplement with regular detox. A toxic body cannot heal itself and can only respond with inflammation that fuels the flame of the migraine. I recommend all migraine members to see me for detox options.

Gut Dysbiosis – if anyone knows me they all know that I will gladly talk their ears off about gut functions and the enteric nervous system at any given opportunity. My staff gets the glazed look in the eye when they hear the word gut trickle out of my mouth. In short the gut is the epicenter of our heath, the grand central station of our health. Gut health influences our hormones, our absorption of what is good and our excretion of what is bad. The gut directly influences hormones, energy, even thought and brain function. A gut filled with allergen producing, GMO slop masquerading as food cannot create a body and soul of vitality. I recommend that everyone with migraines see me immediately for a gut tune up and a 5R protocol.

Upper cervical subluxations – Let me be clear, I believe that any spinal subluxation can cause a migraine and neuroscience is showing that any area of subluxation can create pain patterns in any area of the body. Specifically, the upper cervical area is a powerful input into the central nervous system. The nerves that come from your neck influence most of the muscles and sensations and actions of the face, neck shoulders arms and upper back. Nerves from your neck actually intertwine and relay with cranial nerves originating from the brain stem and brain itself. There is no faster physical way to change the landscape of your neurology than a chiropractic adjustment. I have NEVER met a person with headaches of any kind and especially migraines that did not have a cervical subluxation. When a chiropractor creates optimal function in the joint complex that houses these nerves and restores proper never function, your body has only one response option… to improve and head in the direction of a homeostasis, and well being.

I hope that you do not know agony of a migraine.

I hope that if you do, you understand that there are better treatment options beyond the big pharm.

Thanks for reading this and forward it on to the 5 people that you know with migraines.
